Improving Life in the New Millennium: A Showcase of Research at the University of Adelaide

Members of the public and University of Adelaide Alumni are cordially invited to attend a free information session on Saturday 27th September.

Several academics from the University will showcase some of the exciting research coming from the Faculties of Health Sciences and Sciences that examines ways of improving physical and mental health.

Professor John Taplin, the Head of the Department of Psychology will talk about intelligence, mental health, and optimism. Professor Taplin will discuss how IQ scores have risen markedly over the past century and how this trend looks like continuing. He will also explain how our understanding of mental illness is growing rapidly and that methods for helping people with various mental health needs are increasingly available.

Dr Pat Buckley, Head of Physiology and Associate Dean (International), Faculty of Sciences, will talk about new research showing that there may be ways to restore function in the central nervous system following injuries such as stroke or spinal cord trauma. Within the Faculty of Sciences, internationally-recognised researchers and their students are investigating ways to 're-wire' the brain's nerve circuitry, and determining how to 're-direct the traffic' of adult neural stem cells within the body. These approaches are beginning to yield some very exciting results, and have the potential to influence how damage to the central nervous system may be treated in the future.

Associate Professor Viv Burgess, Dean of the Dental School will talk about innovations in dental health and how modern dentists are more 'dental physicians' than dental surgeons in that they concentrate on restoring damaged and diseased teeth rather than always simply extracting them. He will demonstrate this point by discussing innovative research into 'smart fillings' for dental cavities. These fillings do more than simply fill cavities; they actually help to restore teeth function and appearance.

The presenters, (together with Associate Professor Deborah Turnbull (Associate Dean, International, Faculty of Health Sciences and Mrs Iris Liu, International Student Manager, Department of Psychology)), will be available to speak to those interested in studying the Health Sciences or Sciences at the University.

The lecture will commence at 8pm and will be followed by a light supper. The location is:
